It has been reported that the Queen of England has amulets of animals that she carries with her to bring about good luck. Charm jewelry has been popular among royalty for centuries. The particular use of such adornments among royalty is likely due to the fact that they could only be afforded by the wealthy. These days, charm jewelry is worn by a much more wide ranging group of people as the cost of such jewelry is not as class prohibitive as it used to be.
There is a long tradition of royalty handing down charm jewelry from one generation to the next. The infinite possibilities for charms or amulets used has resulted in absolutely unique pieces. The combination of charms in such jewelry is thought to bring about a mystical aura, which many throughout history have attached their fate to.
Royalty would often use the more expensive pure gold or silver as the basis for their jewelry. This was especially important for passing the pieces down to later generations. Such precious metals are able to endure the test of time.
Amulets worn by ancient royalty were often associated with the most prevalent religion in their culture at the time. Although talismans and amulets were looked down upon by the Catholic Church, objects that were blessed by the church were used regularly to ward off evil spirits. These sacramentals, as they are known, included one of the most widely used symbols throughout history, the crucifix. The cross has been observed in many forms of jewelry.

While royalty wore the more everlasting forms of charm jewelry in the form of gold and silver, cultures since prehistoric times have made such jewelry out of less expensive materials.

In the South American countries of Argentina and Bolivia, the god Ekeko is often worn in charm jewelry to bring abundant fortune. The Buddhist culture has an ancient and extensive tradition of using talismans as an essential part of the religion.
Throughout history, the seemingly endless variety of religious and other significant symbols have been used in jewelry. Cultures around the globe now have a rich collection of jewelry consisting of amulets and talismans worn by royalty and, currently, by the general population.
