Discover Colorful Tibetan Costume
Tibetan clothing is generally known to be bright and colorful. The Tibetan costume has a strong connection with the people, and climate of “roof of the world”. The costume reflects the history, culture, beliefs, character and wealth of the local people. When you take a Tibet tour, never miss its unique costume culture.
The Tibetan robe: Talking about Tibetan dress, you will think of the Tibetan robe. The Tibetan people call it Zhuba. The Tibetan robe worn by men is broad and is normally fastened under the right arm, while the robes worn by women are slightly narrower with or without sleeves. The robes often fastened with two cloth belts. Virtually every Tibetan man wears such a robe without pocket.
Tibetan robes are held together with a band instead of buttons and with the front puffing up so as to carry daily necessities, or even their children inside. An interesting thing about the robes is that the sleeves can be removed. They are often removed when sleeping or working in warm weather. Since the day and night temperatures vary greatly, Tibetan people usually do not put their arms in their sleeves during the day, but rather tie the sleeves around their waist wearing their robe as a kind of skirt.
The Tibetan boots: When you walking in the street, you will see either Tibetan women or men wear boots and all kinds of boots are straight without distinguishing left and right and without men and women style. They are just divided into long leg boots, short leg boots, unlined boots and cotton-padded boots. According to the material, it can roughly be divided into three kinds: cowhide, corduroy and pulu. Boots of Changdu and northern Tibet are simple, honest, and tasteful, while boots of Shannan and Rikeze are delicate, careful, and refined. Boots in Lhasa region incorporate the strong points of different places and they are elegant with bright color.
The Tibetan apron: The apron is one of the Tibetan women favorite dresses. It is called Bangdan in Tibetan. According to custom, the aprons are only worn by married women but today more and more unmarried young ladies also like to wear them. Tibetan women tie the aprons around their waists. The apron is made of colorful pulu with red, green, sky-blue, lemon yellow, purple and white in the material. The most popular apron is a kind of long apron which is tied around waist and hung from front waist to lower hem of the skirt. This apron is sewn by three separate vertical pieces and on each piece there are colorful horizontal stripes patterns. The apron shines faintly, giving the feel of sunshine.
The Tibetan scarf: A traditional ceremonial scarf used in Tibet. The Tibetan people call it “Khata”. It is often given as a gift at special Tibetan ceremonies. It symbolizes goodwill, auspiciousness and compassion. It is usually made of silk. The color of the scarf is usually always white as this symbolizes the pure heart of the giver.
The scarf can be presented at any festive occasions to a host or at weddings, funerals, births, graduations, arrivals and departure of guests, etc. The Tibetan people commonly give a kind acknowledgment of “Tashi Delek” (meaning good luck) at the time of presenting.
